The wines of Jongieux: an exceptional terroir in Savoie

We offer a selection of wines from Jongieux, carefully crafted in the foothills of Savoie. Our white wines, such as Jacquère and Roussette, are best enjoyed young and offer a freshness and liveliness typical of our terroir. The Marestel wine can be enjoyed now or cellared to reveal its complexity over time. We also offer a rosé, perfect for summer barbecues and sunny aperitifs. For special occasions, our Crémant de Savoie is an excellent alternative to Champagne, with fine bubbles and lovely freshness.

On the red wine side, discover our fruity Gamay and our typical Mondeuse, two wines from Jongieux that are perfect to pair with Savoyard dishes, especially those with cheese or meat in sauce. Our wines fully express the identity of our terroir and are just as welcome during convivial moments as they are with more refined meals.

The history of the wines of Jongieux in Savoie

The wine of Jongieux is closely linked to the wine-growing history of the region, which dates back over 2,000 years. Three key dates mark the evolution of this unique terroir:

  • 1432: The Altesse grape variety, originally from Cyprus, was introduced into Savoie by Count Marest, giving birth to the famous Roussette de Savoie. The wine produced on the slopes of Jongieux was named Marestel, in honor of this iconic location.
  • 1973: Savoie obtained the protected designation of origin "Vin de Savoie", thanks to improvements in wine quality and the popularization of winter sports, which contributed to the growth of the vineyards.
  • 1989: The Jongieux vineyard was granted the geographical denomination "Vin de Savoie Jongieux", a well-deserved recognition of the expertise of the local winemakers.

Today, the wines of Jongieux, renowned for their quality and typicity, embody a true living heritage. Between the river and the mountains, this exceptional terroir continues to produce authentic wines, the result of the passion and commitment of the winemakers, who remain faithful to the Savoyard traditions.

Jongieux wine: an appellation of Savoie wines

Jongieux wine is produced in the village of Jongieux, in the Savoyard foothills, between the Rhône and the Dent du Chat. After the “Vin de Savoie” AOC was granted in 1973, the vineyard obtained the geographical denomination “Vin de Savoie Jongieux” in 1989, recognising the know-how of the village's winegrowers.

The village produces Jongieux Blanc, made from Jacquère, and Jongieux Rouge, made from Gamay and Mondeuse. Altesse, brought to Savoie in 1432 according to tradition, gives Roussette de Savoie and its emblematic Jongieux cru, Marestel.

The grape varieties of Jongieux wine

On the estate's 15 hectares, we grow five grape varieties, each with its own personality:

Jacquère: the most widely planted grape in Savoie, accounting for half of the region's vineyards. It makes fresh, light, mineral and fruity white wines to be enjoyed young: our Jongieux Blanc and the single-plot cuvée Face à la Dent.

Altesse: its bunches take on a brownish hue as they ripen, hence the name Roussette. It gives floral wines, lightly honeyed and spicy, with a fine minerality: Roussette de Savoie and Marestel.

Chardonnay: grown in Savoie for a long time (our oldest plot dates from 1964), it offers white-flower aromas and a creamy texture: our Savoie Chardonnay. Together with Jacquère and Altesse, it also goes into our Crémant de Savoie.

Gamay: a light, gourmand red with strawberry and raspberry aromas, our Jongieux Rouge Gamay. Pressed straight after harvest, it also gives our Savoie rosé.

Mondeuse: Savoie's signature red grape, considered one of the ancestors of Syrah. Tannic, powerful and spicy, it gives our Jongieux Rouge Mondeuse and the oak-aged Cuvée Matè.

Marestel, a cru of Roussette de Savoie

The Marestel hillside lies at the heart of the Jongieux vineyard. The cradle of Altesse, it climbs the slopes of Mont Charvaz, facing the Rhône and the Ain department. Its name recalls the Count of Marest, whom tradition credits with bringing Altesse to Savoie in 1432.

The cru covers only about 25 hectares, 0.75 of which belong to the estate. Some plots, with slopes of up to 70%, cannot be worked by machine: the grapes are picked by hand and carried out in a hod. Marestel is a great white wine for ageing, which can keep for 3 to 8 years, or even longer in great vintages.

The Jongieux terroir

Our vines grow on the scree of the slopes of Mont Charvaz. Facing south-west, they enjoy the sun until its last evening rays. The soils, geologically very young, come from the ice ages: hard limestone, stony slope deposits, tightly packed glacial moraines and sandy torrent deposits. Each terroir brings its own nuance to our wines.

Certified High Environmental Value (HVE) since late 2016, the estate keeps its hedges, lets grass grow on its banks and between the vines, and harvests by hand. Discover our terroir in pictures.

Which dishes go with Jongieux wine?

Jongieux Blanc (Jacquère): aperitif, raclette, grilled fish and, of course, Savoyard fondue or moules-frites.

Roussette de Savoie: aperitif, fish, soufflés, tartiflette and quenelles.

Marestel: pan-fried foie gras, scallops, salmon with hollandaise sauce and ravioles gratin or baked Mont d'Or.

Savoie Chardonnay: fish, white meat, escalope milanese au gratin.

Crémant de Savoie: aperitif and desserts, such as gâteau de Savoie.

Savoie rosé: grilled meats, salads, rabbit.

Jongieux Rouge Gamay: charcuterie, poultry, cheese, dried duck breast or Savoie diots.

Jongieux Rouge Mondeuse: game, meat in sauce, cheese, roast wild boar with polenta or pot-au-feu.

Cuvée Matè (oak-aged Mondeuse): red meat, game, beef carpaccio.

Frequently asked questions about Jongieux wine

It is a Savoie wine produced in the village of Jongieux, in the Savoyard foothills. Since 1989 it has carried the geographical denomination “Vin de Savoie Jongieux”, within the Vin de Savoie AOC granted in 1973.

Jacquère for white wines, Gamay and Mondeuse for reds, and Altesse for Roussette de Savoie and the Marestel cru. We also grow Chardonnay.

Marestel is a cru of Roussette de Savoie, made from the Altesse grape and grown on a very steep hillside of about 25 hectares in Jongieux. It is a great white wine for ageing.

Jongieux Blanc (Jacquère) is the safe bet. For a change, try a light red such as Gamay, or Mondeuse with raclette or tartiflette.

Jacquère and rosé are best drunk within the year, Gamay within 1 to 3 years. Roussette keeps for 2 to 5 years, Mondeuse and Marestel for 3 to 8 years, and Cuvée Matè for up to 10 years.
